Summer Solstice Celebration - Community Contra Dance
Celebrate the Summer Solstice with a community contra dance! Contra dancing is a traditional American folk dance accompanied by live music, typically from the traditional Celtic and New England traditions. Each dance is first taught by a caller, and then danced to music. All ages and skill levels are welcome to this event, no experience necessary. Alice Smolinsky will be calling out the steps while we spin to the rollicking tunes of Atlantic Crossing.
Alice Smolinsky, a Green Mountain College alum, returns to Poultney as the caller of this inaugural community contra dance. Alice has been dancing in Vermont communities for over 15 years and recently started calling contra and family dances with the Mad Robin Callers Collective.
For over two decades Atlantic Crossing have been rocking the contra dance halls of New England and beyond and entrancing concert audiences with paintings in song of local history and more. Their music, drawn from the Celtic traditions of the British Isles as well as from Maritime and French Canada, lifts audiences from their seats, transports dancers to ever greater delight and strikes joyous notes at celebrations.
