The Dorset Barbecue Quartet formed in January 2015 in response to a challenge to help raise money for a toilet to be installed in the Congregational Church in Peru, VT. They were putting on a show, and they were looking for acts. The Dorset Church choir was participating en masse. The four members of the BBQ quartet all sing in the Dorset Church choir, and we all like the sound of barbershop harmonies. So we decided to see if a different sound would be accepted by the standing-room only crowd. We feared facing jeers and ridicule. So to minimize our exposure, we prepared two songs. We weren’t jeered and ridiculed, and some of us even liked the positive feedback we received. Since then, we have memorized those two original songs, and have added 16 more. We have worked under 2 different directors, and now we have memorized the lyrics as well as the music. The Quartet, which aspires to the level of excellence of the Yale Whiffenpoofs, is composed of Richard Grip (Lead), David Chandler (Tenor), Henry Chandler (Baritone), and Roger Squire (Bass). Originally singing only classic barbershop quartet tunes, we have expanded our repertoire beyond the 19th century and early 20th century. We now sing a number of tunes that were classics in the late 20th century as well, including hits from the Beatles. We hope you enjoy the sounds and ambiance of these wonderful melodies from the bygone era, and from the not so distant past.
